Flying with a baby Tips

“Looking for tips on flying with a baby? I’ve been there! Here’s what worked for us, from packing the right stuff to keeping baby comfy on the flight

Tips Before Fly-Day

  1. Check your airline’s policies online:
    • Many baby items, like strollers, car seats, and travel cots, can be brought for free.
    • Diaper bags often don’t count as personal carry-ons.
    • Some smaller strollers can be taken to the gate; larger ones must be checked in (usually free of charge).
  2. Request a bassinet seat:
    • This allows your baby to sleep in a special bed during the flight, typically at no extra cost.
  3. Choose night flights:
    • The plane’s hum and vibrations help babies sleep.
  4. Opt for longer layovers (at least 5 hours):
    • This gives you time to stretch, eat, and maybe even shower.
  5. Fly and book on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for cheaper rates.

Flying with a baby: Tips for Packing Hand Luggage

Elsa’s Diaper Bag:

  • 2-3 sets of clothes (onesies, pyjamas—light and thick)
  • 2 sleeping bags with different TOGs
  • A pacifier
  • Essential medicines: Mamanatura drops, Paracetamol, saline solution
  • Blankets, diapers, wipes, diaper cream
  • A few toys
  • A baby wrap
  • Inflatable nursing cushion
  • Noise-cancelling headphones
  • Burp cloths
  • Nursing cover ( I have one from babyonthemove – which I really like)
  • Baby formula (even though I was still breastfeeding I bought these travel size formula portions- just in case)

In a larger trolley/your own carry-on:

  • Extra items to replenish the diaper bag during layovers without having to unpacking everything on the plane.

Flying with a baby: Tips for On the Plane

  1. Board early:
    • Organize essentials in seat pockets (diapers, clothes, medicines, etc.).
  2. Inflate your nursing cushion and get comfortable.
  3. Feed during take-off and landing to help your baby’s ears adjust to pressure changes.
  4. Use the bassinet:
    • Take turns watching the baby; you’ll need to remove her during turbulence.
  5. Don’t overthink it but also don’t expect much sleep.
  6. Bring a baby wrap in case she prefers sleeping close to you.
  7. Wear comfy clothing and bring a set of spare clothes for yourself.
